So this happened. The other day I was lying down after a long bath, just savoring the warmth and relaxation, and my mind wondered to Leo from Naked Organics. I’ve been trying to get into his head and to understand his motivation for a long time, but he’s been reluctant to talk to me.
I always feel foolish when I say stuff like this, that characters talk or don’t talk to me, but that’s how it works. So who am I to question it?
Out of the blue Leo started telling me the true fears behind his motivations. This is what I’ve been waiting for . . . well, for years. I’ve truly been trying to write Fresh Earth and Fresh Shares for years now. I thought it was Charlie who was holding me up, but nope. I think it’s been Leo all along.
Fresh Earth is Charlie’s story, so it will truly focus on him, while Fresh Shares will hone in on Leo, however, both books are their love story. What happens in Charlie’s book will impact Leo’s book, and to have that work out without me writing another 50,000 words (yes, I have that much written in Charlie’s book already) that I’ll likely trash, I need to define Leo’s internal and external motivations, his fears, his strengths, his essence.
So as Leo finally told me why he’s so reluctant to give his whole heart over to one man, I started to cry.
It was a heart-wrenching reason. And it was unexpected, at least to that depth. I understood his motivations on the surface, but this little mental conversation I had with him the other day went so deep I felt it in my bones.
I love when characters finally talk to me. I love it. I love it. I love it.
And if you’ve not seen an image of the man that’s been in my head for years as Leo, it is model Aiden Brady. Now if only I could buy this image for my cover.
